Police Restraint Techniques Flashcards
When should force be used?
Only when justified, and must be applied proportionately to protect the officer or others from harm or when detaining a person after attest or for the purposes of a search.
How is it recommended that people are restrained?
Face down, for only the shortest period of time.
On some occasions, using your knee or body weight to control the person.
What is postural asphyxia?
Can occur when a person’s body position or posture reduces their ability to breathe (poorly executed restraint).
The risk of postural asphyxia is increased for what type of people?
There is an increased risk of causing positional asphyxia when restraining those of particularly small or large build or those who have taken drugs, medications (anti-psychotics) or alcohol.
How to prevent postural asphyxia?
Pressure should not be applied to chest area or the back, and a seated person should not be forced or left leaning forward.
The warning signs of impending PA are relatively clear and include:
Suddenly become quiet
Complaining of not being able to breathe
Noisy breathing, gurgling, chocking etc
Signs of cyanosis (blue lips, eyelids, gums)
Signs of force or stress in the face and neck, such as raised blood vessels.
