What is saluting
A salute is a gesture of respect or goodwill which requires officers to raise their hands to the
peak of their headdress and bring the hand down smartly to their side.
All members of the Service in uniform shall pay compliments to the under mentioned
by saluting
Their excellencies, the President and his wife.
(ii) The Honourable Prime Minister.
(iii) Members of Cabinet.
(iv) The Chief Justice, all judges of the Appeal Court and other judges of the High
Court.
(v) President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
(vi) The Chairman of the Tobago House of Assembly.
(vii) Chairman of the Police Service Commission.
(d) Members of the Service, when in uniform, shall salute officers’ senior in rank to
themselves in the services listed hereunder:
(i) Commissioned officers of the Defence Force;
(ii) First Division officers of the Fire Service;
(iii) Officers of and above the rank of Assistant Superintendent of the Prison
Service.
Paying of compliments in a vehicle
Police officers who are sitting in a vehicle which is stationary, shall pay compliments by sitting to
attention and giving an eyes’ right or left as the case may be, and the driver of such vehicle shall
place his hands on the steering wheel.
Paying of compliments when mounted
Police officers when mounted on horseback, shall pay compliments by sitting upright and giving a
hand salute.
Paying of compliments in a charge room
On the arrival of a senior officer on a visit to a charge room the following actions shall be taken:
(a) The first officer on duty who observes the arrival of the visiting officer shall call the charge
room personnel to attention.
(b) The senior officer on duty in the charge room shall salute and report on the state of his district.
- Paying of compliments to the national anthem
First Division officers in uniform shall pay compliments by saluting when the national anthem of
Trinidad and Tobago and all other nations are being played. All Second Division officers must stand
smartly to attention.
Paying of compliments to the national flag
First Division officers in uniform shall salute while the national flag is being raised, lowered or
carried on parade. Second Division officers must stand at attention.
Compliments to be reciprocated
(1) Where a party of junior officers are paying compliments to a First Division officer, the most
senior officer in that party shall salute and the other officers will stand to attention.
(2) It shall be the duty of the First Division officer to whom a compliment is paid to return a
salute with the courtesy it deserves.

(3) Where two or more First Division officers are together, the senior shall return the
compliment.
Non-paying of Compliments
A police officer shall not be required to pay compliments in public view to First Division officers of
the plainclothes sections of the Police Service—
(a) When in control of any mechanically propelled vehicle that is in motion.
(b) When actually engaged in directing traffic.
(c) When on any other duty that requires an officer’s full attention (e.g., crowd control).

- General duties of police officer
A police officer
(a) shall preserve the peace and detect crimes and other breaches of the law;
(b) may arrest, charge and bring before a summary court a person found committing any offence
rendering him liable to arrest without warrant, or whom he may reasonably suspect of having
committed any such offence;
(c) may summon before a summary court a person whom he reasonably suspects of committing
an offence;
(d) may prosecute a person who commits any offence;
(e) shall serve and execute at any time, including Sundays, all processes which he may be
directed to serve or execute;
(f) shall keep order in and within the precincts and in the vicinity of all courts during all sittings
of such courts;
(g) shall repress internal disturbances; and
(h) shall generally do and perform all the duties appertaining to the office of a constable.
On duty attire and appearance of and officer
Police officers when on duty must always be cleanly and smartly attired. They shall not appear in
the public view improperly dressed.

What is a Pocket Diary
Pocket Diary” refers to an official diary approved by the Commissioner of Police and issued to all
police officers.
What should be done when a Pocket Diaries is loss
1) It shall be the duty of all police officers to secure their pocket diaries against loss.
(2) A police officer shall immediately report the loss of his pocket diary as soon as such loss is
discovered, giving details of the circumstances surrounding the loss
Production of Diaries in Court Orderly Room and Court
(1) Police officers attending court orderly room and court shall take with them their official
pocket diaries in which there are entries relating to the specific cases in which they have to give
evidence.
(2) The pocket diaries shall be regarded as exhibits and will be available for reference by, or
production to, the court and shall be kept until the expiration of such cases.
When can pocket dairy be Inspected
1) Pocket diaries must be produced for inspection and initialling on the following occasions:
(a) to the Second Division officer-in-charge station/branch every day;
(b) when returning to a station of duty or from leave;
(c) when leaving a station of duty or on leave (except in cases of emergency);
(d) when visited on duty by a senior officer;
(e) on any other occasion at the request of a senior.
What is Purpose of the Pocket Diary
The pocket diary is the police officer’s best safeguard against allegations of dishonesty and acting in
bad faith when performing his/her duties. Therefore, the officer shall –
(a) record therein all activities connected with the performance of his duties;
When should you have your Possession of Pocket Diary
Police officers shall have in their possession at all times their officially issued pocket diaries.

Property refers to any animal, article or thing, which came into possession of the police
either through finding, seizure or any other lawful means.
Define Found Property
1) Property required as court exhibits shall be handed over to the property manager as
soon as is practicable.
What is Prisoner Property
Prisoner property refers to any item, article or thing found in the possession, or on the
person, of someone in lawful custody which may or may not be required for production in court
as an exhibit.

Dangerous drugs refer to any narcotic drug or thing that contains such a drug or
psychotropic substance as listed in the First and Second Schedules of the Dangerous Drugs Act
N0. 38 of 1991 (as amended Chapter 11:25)

1) General property refers to all types of property mentioned above, inclusive of
exhibits, that are lodged with the property manager at divisional Headquarters including the
Criminal Investigations Department of a police station for safe keeping or for another lawful
purpose.

A cell in which prisoners are confined shall be opened by lesson fewer than two police officers.

(1) A prisoner shall be searched on arrest, on arrival at the police station and immediately
before being placed in a cell and again on being taken from the cell.
(2) At a police station a male prisoner shall be searched by two male police officers and
a female prisoner by a female officer.
When should a prisoner be Feed
1) The Commissioner may fix the daily ration for a prisoner in police custody.
(2) A prisoner shall be fed three times daily at 7:30 am, 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm or as near
as possible to these hours.
(3) A prisoner may be supplied with food from outside, but the officer in charge of the
reception area shall examine all such food.
What should done when a prisoner is SICK
(1) When a prisoner reports sick, the senior police officer at the police station shall
immediately notify the appropriate government medical officer or take the prisoner to a duly
qualified medical practitioner or institution.
(2) Upon notice under sub-regulation (1), the government medical officer, duly qualified
practitioner or medical institution may order the prisoner to be taken to a public hospital and he
shall be escorted to such hospital in custody.
