Institutions that enforce the law (3), what do they do? what would happen without them?

They enforce the criminal law, keep society safe, and uphold social cohesion.
Without these institutions, the criminal law would be redundant.
Role of the Police
Victoria Police describes its function as being ‘to serve the Victorian community and uphold the law to promote a safe, secure and orderly society.’
Police role in 3 categories (PIP)
> Prevention
Investigation
Prosecution
Prevention:
Prevent crime by patrolling and maintaining social order, educating society to deter criminal behaviour
Investigation:
Detect and investigate crimes. Identify offenders and collect evidence of their offending
Prosecution:
prosecute offenders for the crimes they have committed by charging individuals with a crime
and conducting legal proceedings in a court.
Role of police: Investigating crimes
The police are responsible for the investigation of crimes. They detect and investigate criminal activities by responding to incidents, gathering evidence, and identifying offenders. Their investigative work is vital in building cases against individuals suspected of wrongdoing.
Role of Delegated Bodies
Delegated bodies are specialised government agencies who, due to their expertise in a particular area, have been given the authority from parliament to make and enforce laws within their area.
Role of Worksafe
> Established under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic).
> Aims to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees and other individuals at work.
> Ensures that workers are protected and do not feel their safety is at risk when working.
> Imposes a duty on employers to provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to health.
