Polar pattern Flashcards
Identify different polar pattern, their characteristics and uses
Omnidirectional
Captures sound equally from all directions
Uses of omnidirectional
Ideal for capturing ambient sound, interviews, and large groups
Cardioid
Heart-shaped, picking up sound mostly from the front and sides while rejecting sound from the rear
Uses of cardioid
Popular for vocal recording, speeches, and instruments, as it isolates unwanted background noise
Subcardioid
Primarily from the front, with more side and rear pickup than a cardioid
Uses of subcardioid
Useful when you want more natural room sound but still need some isolation from the rear noise, such as in studio or live recording environments
Supercardioid
Similar to cardioid but with a tighter pickup angle at the front and slight pickup at the rear
Uses of supercardioid
Used in noisy environments or on-stage performances
Hypercardioid
Even narrower than supercardioid with more rear pickup
Uses of hypercardioid
Useful in very noisy environments where the focus on sound directly in front is crucial
Figure-8
Picks up sound equally from the front and rear while rejecting sound from the sides
Uses of figure-8
Duet recording or interviews where 2 sources are on opposite sides of the mic
Shotgun
Highly directional, capturing sound in a narrow beam from the front and rejecting sound from the sides and rear
Uses of shotgun
Used in film and TV to focus in specific from a distance
