POIS Flashcards
What are the five POIS?
1) mediastinal emphysema
2) pneumothorax
3) tension pneumothorax
4) subcutaneous emphysema
5) arterial gas embolism
What is the mediastinal symptoms?
Mild or moderate pain under the breast bone, dull ache or feeling of tightness, deep inspration, coughing, swallowing makes pain worse, worsening pain that radiates in the shoulder, neck and back.
What are the symptoms of pneumothorax POIS?
Sharp unilateral pain in chest, shoulder or upper back. Paleness and shallow rapid breathing.
What are the symptoms of tension pneumothorax POIS?
Progressively worsening symptoms. Respiratory distress, collapsed lung, shock, death.
What are the symptoms of subcutaneous emphysema?
Difficulty swallowing, fullness around the neck, voice change. Swelling and movement around the windpipe causes crack or crunching (crepitation).
What are the symptoms of AGE (arterial gas embolism)
Usually occurs within the first 1-10 minutes after surfacing.
Paralysis of extremities. Weakness, numbness, dizziness, blurred vision and unconsciousness.
What does POIS stand for?
Pulmonary over inflation syndrome
What is the treatment for A.G.E?

What is the treatment of pneumothorax?

What is the treatment for subcutaneous emphysema?
100% O2
Perform neuro
Notify chamber
DMO’s discretion (shallow recompression)
What is a Neuro? When do you do it?
Neurological examination. Performed to rule out an arterial gas embolism whenever diving disorders are suspected.
What are the steps of neuro?
(MCM-CSD)
- Mental status
- Coordination
- Motor
- Cranial nerves
- Sensory
- Deep tendon reflexes
