Point Group Functions Flashcards
Five Shu Point Theory
Flow of Qi along the channel is always from extremities to elbow or knee.
Qi is flowing through a dynamic change in quality.
Jing well
Fullness below Heart; diseases of zang; disorders of spirit.
Most distal points of any channel are strongest to clear excess and heat from opposite end of channel.
Ying spring
Heat in body; changes to color of complexion; diseases of Yang channels, diseases of zang (with Shu stream).
Needle with Shu stream on Yin channels for diseases of of zang (LU SP HT KD PC LV).
Shu stream
Heaviness of body and pain of joints; intermittent diseases; diseases of zang, disorders of Yang channel (with Ying spring point).
On Yin channels are primary points for tonifying respective zang, same points as Yuan source points.
On Yang channels have important actions on respective channels.
Jing river
Cough and dyspnoea chills and fever; diseases affecting voice; diseases of sinews and bones.
He sea
Counterflow qi and diarrhea; diseases of Stomach, disorders from food stag (with Lower He sea); diseases of fu; diseases of skin (Yang only).
LI11 and UB40 most imp for skin diseases.
Lower He sea
SP9, KD10, LV8 Yin foot channels: Strongly drain dampness and damp heat from fu or extraordinary fu in lower Joao. Esp bladder intestines uterus.
GB34, ST36: most important on their channels for treating related fu.
ST37: disorders of intestines
UB39: qi transforming action of UB, important for difficult urination and retention of urine.
Xi cleft points
Where qi and blood, which flow superficially along channels from Jing well points, gather and plunge more deeply.
Indicated in treatment of acute conditions and pain.
Of Yin channels, additional action of treating disorders of blood.
Yuan source points
Where original qi surfaces and lingers.
On Yin channels, same as Shu stream points; primary to tonify and regulate respective zang.
On Yang channels, dispel excess pathogenic factors, treat disorders along pathway of respective channels.
If zang are diseased abnormal reactions will appear at source points to relevant zang.
Luo connecting points
Treat disorders of int-ext related channel or zangfu.
Treat disorders in regions reached by luo connecting channel.
Treat psycho emotional disorders.
+ REN15, DU1, SP21
Yuan + Luo = host and guest. Yuan of primarily affected channel is combined with Luo of int-ext channel. Combo on same yin channel for chronic diseases. Exp. LU9 + LU7 for chronic cough.
Back Shu points
Correspond to the 12 zangfu and lie along UB channel.
Treat Yin diseases - deficiency and cold and diseases of zang.
Not for channel disorders. But can be indicated for disorders of sense organs pertaining to related zangfu.
Likely to become tender in response to disharmony of respective zangfu which can help contribute to diagnosis.
Commonly combined with front mu in treatment.
Front mu points
Located on chest and abdomen in close proximity to related organ.
Where qi of zangfu gathers and concentrates on anterior surface of body.
Treat disorders of their related zangfu but not respective channel except LU1, LV14, GB24 which lie on their related channel.
Likely to become tender in response to disharmony of respective zangfu which can help contribute to diagnosis.
Commonly combined with back Shu in treatment.
Hui meeting points
earth• LIV-13 is both the hui-meeting point of the zang and the front-mu point of the Spleen. LIV-13 is therefore an important point to tonify the Spleen itself as well as all the zang and the body as a whole. • REN-12 is both the hui-meeting point of the fu and the front-mu point of the Stomach. As the origin of the post-natal qi, the Stomach (and Spleen) is considered to play a central role among the zangfu, transforming and distributing the essence of food and drink throughout the body. For this reason, the Stomach may be said to dominate the fu. • REN-17 is the hui-meeting point of the Qi and is also known as (Upper Sea of Qi). REN-17 has a strong effect on the gathering (zong) qi which in turn regulates both the Lung functions of dominating qi and controlling respiration and speech, and the Heart function of gov- erning the blood and blood vessels. • Geshu BL-17 is the hui-meeting point of blood and is the single most important acupuncture point for the treatment of any disorder arising from blood heat, blood stasis or blood deficiency. • GB-34 is the hui-meeting point of the sinews and has long been considered the main point to influence the sinews throughout the body, for ex- ample in cases of contraction of the sinews, stiffness of the neck and shoulders, stiffness and tightness of the muscles and joints, and most especially disorders of the leg such as knee pain, hemiplegia, atrophy disor- der and painful obstruction. • LU-9 is the hui-meeting point of the pulse and vessels. The vessels gather at LU-9. LU-9 is an important point to harmonise the relationship between the gathering (zong) qi and the blood flowing in the vessels. When the gathering qi is deficient and fails to circulate the blood, it will pool and stagnate in the chest and Heart, giving rise to various manifestations of blood stasis. LU-9 is further indicated for disorders of the blood vessels in general such as vomiting, spitting or coughing blood and pulseless syndrome. • BL-11 is the hui-meeting point of bone and is indicated for various bone diseases and rigidity and pain of the neck, spine and lumbar region. In modern clinical practice it is used when painful obstruction penetrates deeply into the bones and joints causing deformity (known as bony painful obstruction). • GB-39 is the hui-meeting point of marrow, the origin of the bone marrow. It is able to benefit the sinews and bones and is indicated for a wide range of disorders characterised by weakness, flaccidity, con-traction and pain of the limbs.
Confluence points of 8 extraordinary vessels
Activate respective extraordinary channel.
Affect specific symptoms and areas of the body.
12 heavenly star points
Most important points according to Ma Dan-Yang.
