Poetry Year 9 core Flashcards
Language analysis
Identifying interesting words or language techniques that the poet has used and what effect they have.
Intention/ ideology
What is the main message of the poem? What is the poet trying to make you think and feel?
Structure
The structure of a poem is made from two things.
1) The physical structure = stanzas, enjambement, rhyme scheme etc.
2) The way the poet directs your attention during the poem. What does the poet make you think about at the start, middle and end? If it’s a poem with many stanzas, what does the poet make you think about in each stanza?
Theme
Are there any ideas or emotions that reccur throughout the poem? If there are, they are probably themes.
If an object or person pops up repeatedly this is known as a “motif”
Form
The form of a poem is it’s genre, or type. The poem could be something with a set structure like a sonnet. It could be semi-structured or free form.
A free form poem has no clear structure, it is held together by a loose rhythm.
A semi structured poem has a meter (rhythm pattern) and probably a rhyme scheme.
