Used to compare things that are not alike: Simile uses “like or as “ Metaphor the comparison is implied
Hyperbole
Excessive exaggeration to prove a point
Metonymy
Thing is equal to concept; The crown is linked to royalty
Synechdoche
part equals whole
Personification
Giving animals, objects, or concepts human like qualities.
Apostrophe
Addressing someone or something that is not present as if they can reply back ex: Writing a letter to your mom
Imagery
Symbol
An object or action in a literary work that means more than itself, that stands for something beyond itself. The glass unicorn in The Glass Menagerie, the rocking horse in “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” the road in Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”–all are symbols in this sense.
Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds, especially at the beginning of words.

Groups of lines in a poem

Long Narrative poem that records a hero adventures

Poem that expresses emotions

Direct or indirect reference to a person, place or event

Something that causes a hero downfall

Using how does a poem mean allows us as readers to examine how a poem presents an experience.
