Personification
Gives human characteristics to non-living objects
Example- “the sky was full of dancing stars”
Hyperbole
An outrageous exaggeration
Example- “you snore louder than a freight train”
Symbolism
A word with meaning of its own but is used to represent something else
Example- an apple is used to represent education
Alliteration
The repetition of sounds
Example- “Betty bought butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the bitter butter better”
Onomatopoeia
Words that mimic sounds
Example- “the burning wood hissed and cracked”
Allusion
A brief reference to a person, place, event, or movement
Connotation
The emotional suggestion of a word; can be positive, negative, or neutral
Denotation
Literal meaning of a word
Lines
Poetry is written in lines
Stanzas
Grouping of lines
Repetition
Repeated use of a sound

Repetition of sounds at the end of lines
