Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds within non-rhyming words
Central Idea
A main or controlling idea that is important throughout the entire piece
Connotation
An attitude or feeling associated with a word; may be positive or negative
Figurative language
Language that communicates meanings beyond the literal meanings of words
Metaphor
A figure of speech that compares two basically unlike things without “like” or “as”
Extended metaphor
A figure of speech that compares two essentially unlike things without “like” or “as” in many ways
Personification
A figure of speech in which human qualities are given to an animal, object, or idea
Simile
A figure of speech making a comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as”
Flashback
An account of a conversation, and event, or an episode that took place before the beginning of the story
Images/imagery
Consisting of descriptive words or phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader
Implied theme
A theme that is implied or suggested by details
Mood
A feeling or atmosphere the writer creates through language and imagery
Parallelism
The use of similar grammatical constructions to express related ideas
Repetition
A technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for emphasis or unity
Rhyme
The pattern of similar or identical sounds at the ends of words Internal rhyme: occurring and single line of poetry
End rhyme: occurs at a line’s end in poetry
Slant rhyme/consonance
End rhyme that is not exact, but is approximate
Stanza
A group of two or more lines that form A unit in poetry
Symbolism
Using a person, place, object, or activity to stand for something beyond itself
Tone
The attitude a writer takes toward a subject; tone reflects the feelings of the writer unlike mood which creates a feeling for the reader
Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words
