Metaphor
a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison
Simile
a figure of speech that compares two unlike things using the words “like” or “as.”
Assonance
a literary technique where the same or similar vowel sound is repeated
Alliteration
the repetition of the same sound at the start of a series of words
Sibilance
a type of literary device and figure of speech wherein a hissing sound is created in a group of words through the repetition of ‘s’ sounds
Juxtaposition
the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect
Onomatopoeia
a literary device in which a word is used to represent a sound
Enjambment
when a line is cut off before it’s natural stopping point
End stopped line
the end of the line completes a sentence or phrase, and is often but not always “stopped” by a punctuation mark
Rhyme
a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words
Meter
describes the rhythm (or pattern of beats) in a line of poetry
Rhythm
the use of stressed and unstressed syllables to create a beat
Stanza
a division of a poem consisting of a series of lines arranged together in a usually repeating pattern of rhythm and rhyme
Couplet
a pair of consecutive lines of poetry that create a complete thought or idea
Internal rhyme
words rhyme within a line rather than between two different lines
