Metaphor
Compare 2 things. Example, time is a thief, you are a couch potato
Simile
Compares 2 things (like,as). Example, busy as a bee, clean as a whistle
Personification
Gives human characteristics to imitate objects. Example: the sun greeted me this morning
Hyperbole
Outrageous exaggeration. Example: you snore loader than a freight train
Symbolism
Word has meaning which means something else. Example: dove-love, black-death
Alliteration
Repetition of sounds. Example: Betty bought butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the bitter butter better
Onomatopoeia
Sound device. Example: bam, boom, hiss, crackle
Allusion
Reference to a specific person, place, event, or movement.
Connotation
Emotional suggestion of a word. Example: sweet, kind, mean, busy
Denotation
Literal meaning of the word. Example Sherpas
Lines
Poetry is written in lines
Stanza
Grouping of lines
