Poetry Vocab Flashcards
An expression that is not meant to be taken literally. Writers use this to express ideas in vivid and imaginative way. We see this a lot in poetry.
Figurative language
Verse that expresses a poet’s thoughts and feelings about a single image or idea. It is written in vivid, musical language.
Lyric poetry
A regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem. You assign a letter to the ends of each line to indicate it.
Rhyme scheme
Poetry that tells a story. Like a story, it has a plot, characters, and a setting. Uses rhyme and/or repetition.
Narrative poetry
Word that imitates the sound it suggest
Onomatopoeia
Descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the 5 senses
Imagery
A comparison between 2 unlike things without using like or as
Metaphor
Giving human characteristics to a non-human subject
Personification
Exaggeration meant to produce a particular effect
Hyperbole
A comparison of 2 unlike things using like or as
Simile
Common phrases or terms whose meaning are not literal
Idiom
Repetition of words beginning with the same letter or sound are strung together (she sells sea shells)
Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds at the middle or ends of non-rhyming words or syllables
Consonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in neighboring non-rhyming words. Words with similar vowel sounds.
Assonance
A diamond shape poem that uses a certain form
