Rhyme scheme
A pattern of lines of poetry where the final words rhyme with each other in the ending sound.
Stanza
Lines grouped in a poem.
Couplet
Two lines of poetry next to each other that form a unit through rhyme or rhythm.
Free verse
Poetry that does not have to follow any specific rules about rhyme, length of lines, number of lines, or rhythm.
Haiku
A Japanese poem that consists of three lines, has a strict number of syllables and is typically about something in nature.
Limerick
A five-line poem that follows the AABBA rhyme scheme that is typically funny.
Slam poetry
A form of poetry in which poets perform spoken words before a live audience.
Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as.
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using like or as
Personification
Giving human-like qualities to something non-human.
Symbolism
Something that is recognized to represent something else.
Repetition
Using the same word or words over and over again to emphasize the importance of or bring attention to a particular part.
Figurative language
A word or phrase that does not have its normal, literal meaning.
Imagery
Details that appeal to the five senses.
