Rhyme Scheme
A pattern of lines of poetry where the final words rhyme with each other in the ending sound
Stanza
Lines grouped together in a poem
Couplet
Two lines of poetry next to each other that form a unit through rhyme or rhythm
Free Verse
Poetry that does not have to follow any specific rules about rhyme, length of lines, number of lines, or rhythm
Haiku
A Japanese poem that consists of three lines, has a strict number of syllables, and is typically about something in nature
Limerick
A five line poem that follows the AABBA rhyme scheme that is typically funny
Ballad
A poem that tells the story of a person or event following a set rhyme scheme and has a repeated line or stanza
Slam Poetry
A form of poetry in which poets perform spoken word before a live audience
Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using like or as
Personification
Giving human-like qualities to a non-human thing
Symbolism
Something that is recognized to represent something else
Repetition
Using the same word or words over and over again to emphasize the importance of or bring attention to a particular part
Figurative language
A word or phrase that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning
Imagery
Details that appeal to the five senses
