Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds, especially at the beginning of words.
Example: “Fetched fresh, as I suppose, off some sweet wood.”
Notice the repetition of the “F” sound in “Fetched fresh” and the repetition the “S” sound in “suppose, of some sweet.”

Assonance
The repetition of similar vowel sounds in a sentence or a line of poetry or prose.
Example: “I rose and told him of my woe.”
Notice the repetition of the “O” sound.
Consonance
The repetition of consonant sounds in a sentence or a line of poetry or prose.
Example: “The buzz-saw snarled and rattled in the yard.”
Notice the repetition of the “D” sound.
Anaphora
The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
Epistrophe
The repetition of a word or phrase at the ending of successive clauses.
Example: My morning coat, my collar mounting firmly to the chin,
My necktie rich and modest, but asserted by a simple pin.
End Rhyme
End words of lines rhyme.
Full Rhyme
Two words or final syllables of words that sound exactly alike except for the initial consonant sound
Example: (boat, float, goat)
Imperfect Rhyme
The use of words that suggest rhyme but, for some reason, fail to satisfy the criteria for full rhyme.
Example: chill, dull, sail
Internal Rhyme
Rhyme found within a single line.
Example: And for a hundred visions and revisions

Tenor
The object being described.
Example: Life is a journey.
Vehicle
The object describing the tenor.
Example: Life is a journey.
