Define prose
writing that follows the rules of standard written expression
define simile
a comparison of two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”
define metaphor
a comparison of two unlike things not using the words “like” or “as”
Define personification
Giving a non-human thing, human-like characteristics
define verse
writing that doesn’t follow the rules of written expression
define hyperbole
an extreme exaggeration
Define alliteration
the same sound is used at the beginning of each word in a prose or verse
define onomatopoeia
a word that imitates a sound
define imagery
writing that addresses the senses to paint a picture in the readers mind
define symbolism
when something represents something else
define oxymoron
words or phrases that combine opposite ideas
define paradox
an apparently contradictory statement with one element of truth to it.
define allusion
an indirect reference to a well known person, literature, place, thing, event from history, mythology or the bible
define refrain
a line or set of lines repeated throughout the poem
define pun
a play on words which has 3 possible forms
1) a word with 2 different meanings
2) similarity of meaning in 2 words that on homonyms
3) two words that are spelt or pronounced similarly but have different meaning
