What is an Internal Rhyme?
It occurs when at least one of the rhymed words falls within a line or (in the middle of the sentence)
What is an External Rhyme?
It’s a pattern of words that rhyme on the “outside” edge of the poem.
What is an exact rhyme?
It’s where the rhyme is exact
Ex: “moon” “June”
What is an onomatopoeia?
Using words that sound like what they mean
Ex: “Boom” “clap”
What is repetition?
It’s a sound,syllable,word,phrase,line,stanza, or metrical pattern is a basic unifying device
What is alliteration?
Repeating of the same constant sound in several words
What is assonance?
Repetition of vowel sounds in several words
What is rhyme?
Repetition of a stressed vowel sounds in words close together
What is Juxtaposition ?
Placement of objects to compare them
Ex: “my feet stepping on the cracks in the cement detonated red bombs”
What is Tone?
It’s the attitude expressed by the writer- set by the words chosen
What is imagery?
It’s the language that appeals to the senses
Ex: “A fish hook, an open eye”
What is Diction?
It’s the authors word choice- contributes to the tone, or attitude expressed by the speaker
What is Hyperbole?
It’s an exaggeration that is so outrageous that no one wold believe it is true
What is personification?
When you give human traits to non human things
What is a simile?
It compares two things using “like” or “as”
What is a metaphor?
It compares something to something else by stating that it is the same thing
What is a Allusion?
It’s an indirect reference to a well known literary work, historical event, or significant person/creature to evoke old meanings and to create new meanings
What is an oxymoron?
It’s when you go against what you just said or state the opposite
What is an idiom?
It’s an expression that means something different from what the words themselves mean
What is a speaker ?
It’s the narrative voice in a poem that speaks of his or her feelings/ situation
What is a meter?
It’s a specific rhythm determined by the number of beats and the time value assigned to each note in a measure
What is Rhyme Scheme?
It’s the order pattern of rhymes at the end of the lines of a poem or verse
What is a cinquain?
It’s a five line stanza
What is a Quatrain?
It’s a stanza of four lines, especially one having alternate rhymes
