Lines
The basic unit of poetry
Stanzas
Groups of lines in a poem separated from other lines or group of lines
Couplets
A grouping of 2 lines
Quartrains
A grouping of 4 lines
Repetition
Repeated words and phrases in different lines of a poem
Refrain
An entire line that is repeated frequently
Inversion
Changing the normal pattern of words in a sentence
Lyric Poems
A poem that expresses feelings, emotions, ideas, and describes imagery
Narrative Poems
A poem that tells a story
Dramatic Poems
A poem where the speaker of the poem is talking to another character
Ballad
Stanzas of 4 lines, usually a narrative poem with 8,6,8,6 syllable pattern
Sonnet
14 line lyric poem with a 10 syllable pattern as well as a strict rhyme pattern
Free Verse
No structured poem with stanzas and lines and no set rhyme pattern or syllable pattern
Ode
A poem of praise and admiration for someone or something
Allusions
References to history, places, art, architecture, famous people, literature, bible passages, etc
Alliteration
The repetition of beginning consonant sounds in two or more words in a line of poetry. (Sally sells shells by the seashore.)
Rhyme
Words that end with the same sound are rhyming words (locket, pocket)
End Rhymes
two or more rhyming words that are found at the ends of different lines in a poem
Internal Rhymes
two more rhyming words that are found within one line
Rhythm
A particular rhythm is formed in lines of poetry by the number and patterns of accented syllables in each line.
Meter
Number of stressed syllables called beats per line
Line length
Number of syllables in each line
Rhythm is determined by
