What is antithesis
Words and phrases with opposite meanings are balanced against each other
What is apostrophe
Words that are spoken to a person who is absent or imaginary or to an object or abstract idea
What is assonance
Repetition of similar sounds, especially vowel sounds, usually in the middle of a word
What is a ballad
A poem that tells a story, often has a repeated refrain
What is blank verse
Unrhymed iambic pentameter
What is caesura
Natural pause or break in a line or poetry
What is consonance
Repetition of similar consonant sounds, especially at the ends of words
What is a couplet
A pair of lines that are the same length and usually rhyme
What is an epic
A long, serous poem that tells the story of a heroic figure
What is a figure of speech
Words or sounds are arranged In a particular way to achieve a particular effect
What is free verse
Either rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set meter
What is a hyperbole
Deliberate exaggeration is used for emphasis
What is iambic pentameter
A type of meter in poetry,there are five iambs to a line
What is a metaphor
Two things are compared, usually by saying one thing is another
What is a meter
The arrangement of a line of poetry by the number of syllables and the rhythm of stressed syllables
