consonant sounds rhyme (forced, burst or cook, ache)

Consonance
Two consecutive lines with end rhyme
Couplet
Giving human characteristics to nonhuman objects/things
Personification
Poetry without any metrical pattern (rhythm) or definite rhyme
Free verse
The use of a word whose sound suggests it’s meaning (buzz, drip, roar, crack)
Onomatopoeia
A direct comparison between two unlike things, using “like” or “as”
Simile
A four line stanza
Quatrain
Rhyme occurs within a line (he went up a tree and sat on a bee)
Internal rhyme
Pattern of stresses by which meter is measured
Foot
Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Alliteration
A pulse or beat in a line of poetry
Rhythm
Repetition of vowel sounds at beginning of or within words (cat in the hat sat on a mat)
assonance
An indirect or implied comparison between two unlike things
Metaphor
An unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable for a count of 5 beats
Iambic pentameter
A main idea about life presented through the poem
Theme
The atmosphere or feeling created by the poet
Mood
A poem that tells a story and is meant to be heard aloud or sung
Ballad
A speaker addresses a silent or absent listener in a moment of deep emotion as if engaged in a private conversation
Dramatic monologue
A group of lines in a poem, considered a unit
Stanza
Short poems where a single speaker expresses personal thoughts and feelings (covers many subjects, from life and death to every day experiences)
Lyric poetry
The attitude the poet presents towards the subject of the poem
Tone
Referencing a well known literary work, art, person, place or event
Allusion
A poem with the elements of story including characters, setting, plot, etc. which combine to create a theme
Narrative poetry
Repeating of a word or phrase within a poem for effect or emphasis
Repetition
