Simile
Comparing two things using like or as
Metaphor
Comparing two things without using like or as. Ex: Noah has the heart of a lion
Personification
Giving a non human thing human qualities. Ex: The wind howled at the nighttime sky
Symbol
An object or action in a literary work that means more than itself, that stands for something beyond itself.
Example: “a new dawn” talks about a new day but also a fresh start
Alliteration
Alliteration is a literary device where words are used in quick succession and begin with letters belonging to the same sound group. Whether it is the consonant sound or a specific vowel group.
Example: The Wicked Witch of the West
Onomatopoeia
sound words whose pronunciation to the actual sound they represent.
Example: grunt buzz hum
Free Verse
Poetry without a regular pattern of meter or rhyme
End Rhyme
a poem has lines ending with words that sound the same. An example of end rhyme is the poem, Star Light, Star Bright
Internal Rhyme
defined as metrical lines in which its middle words and its end words rhymes with each other.
Example: While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.”
Rhyme scheme
the practice of rhyming words placed at the end of the lines in the prose or poetry
Example: Roses are red (a) Violets are blue (b) Beautiful they all may be (c) But I love you (b) A-b-c-b rhyme scheme
Rhythm
pattern of rhymes that is created by using words that produce the same, or similar sounds.
Example: I am a little tea cup short and stout here is my handle and this is my spout..
Connotations
Figurative
Examples: Throne which if fig for chair
Denotation
Literal
Example: they built a house. House means they are actually building a house if home was used there are too many emotions that are involved with home
Hyperbole
A figure of speech involving exaggeration.
Example: I’m so hungry I can eat a horse
Oxymoron
Two words that contradict each other.
Example: a little big, pretty ugly
