Rhyme
The repetition of a stressed vowel sound and any sounds that follow it in words that are close together in a poem
Rhyme scheme
A regular pattern of end rhymes
End rhymes
Rhymes in poetry occurring at the ends
Internal rhymes
Occur when at least one of the rhymed words falls with in a line
Approximate rhyme
Repeat sounds but are not exact echoes, also called half rhymes, neat rhymes, and slant rhymes
Rhythm
A musical quality based on repetition
Meter
A regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in the lines of a poem
A foot
Consists of one stressed syllable and one or more unstressed syllables
iamb
A foot that has an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable
Onomatopoeia
Using words that sound like what they mean
Alliteration
Repeating the same consonant sound in several words
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in several words
Speaker
The voice that speaks to us
Lyric poem
Express a speakers emotions or thoughts
Free verse
Poetry that does not have a regular meter or rhyme scheme
