Narrative poetry
A form of poetry that tells a story and contains characters setting and plot
Lyric poetry
Highly musical verse, shows emotions
Haiku
Traditional form of japanese poetry, 3 lines, 5\7\5, traditionally about nature
Concrete poetry
Poets use the shape of the words on the page to connect to the subject
Stanzas
Group of lines of poetry (similar to a paragraph)
Punctuation
Marks used to convey meaning ot feeling (optional)
Form
The structure or rules a poet uses to create the poem
Meter
The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem
Rhythm
A repeating sound or beat within a line of poetry
Rhyme
repetition of similar sounds in nearby words
End rhyme
Words at the end of lines of poetry rhyme with other words at the end of lines of poetry
Exact rhyme
The rhyme sounds are exactly alike
Half rhymes
Word sounds are similar but not exact
Rhyme scheme
The pattern of end rhymes in a poem(starts with a lowercase a)
Internal rhyme
A word inside a line of poetry rhymes with another word in the same line
Figurative language
Language not meant to be taken literally
Simile
A comparison between two unlike things using like or as
Metaphor
A direct comparison of two unlike things
Extended metaphor
A comparison made in great detail developed in multiple ways
Hyperbole
An exaggeration made for affect
Personification
Giving human like characteristics to nonhuman objects
Alliteration
Use of the same consonant at the beginning of each stressed syllable in the line of verse
Consonance
The repetition of consonants especially at the ends of words
Assonance
The repetition of similar vowels in the stressed syllables of successive words
