What are lines?
Lines are rows of words that do not follow rules
What is a poem?
Words Arranged in a way to create a strong feeling through meaning sound and rhythm ex “the storm”
What are stanzas?
They are groups of lines set apart by spaces
Fits the overall structure of a poem breaks lines and stanzas in unusual places to get the readers attention
Rhyme
Same ending sound ex is whirling and swirling past
Rhyme scheme
Abab what ending word rhymes with another
Rhythm
Creates a beat Is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in. Line of poetry
Meter
R]is a recurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
Repetition
Repeating words or lines in poetry it can unify a poem or reinforce the meaning or theme
Alliteration
Is the repetition of an initial consonant sound ex
Simile
Comparison uses like or as EX the lake was as smooth as glass
Metaphor
Same as a simile but dose not use like or as ex mia remember everything her mind is a steel trap
Personification
Gives human quality’s to non living things the sun smiled at us on our picnic
Symbolism
The use of an image or thing to stand for something else Lindsay wore black to the funeral
Allusions
Reference to another work it rained so much that i thought we would have to build an ark
POV
Point of view the position of the speaker
Speaker
Is the narrator of a story the voice of a poem
Theme
The central idea of a poem breaks lines
Tone
The mood of a poem and may change as the speaker changes topics
Lyric poem
A short poem like a song
Ode
A poem with one or two more stanzas
Haiku
Very short poem with 17 syllables in three lines
Mostly about nature
Sonnet
A poem with 14 lines first 8 line create the idea the last 6 lines question the idea
Free verse
A poem that dose not follow any rules, rhythm
Or rhyme
Ballad
A short poem with stanzas of 2 to 4 lines and refrains for repeats
