Alliteration
Repetition of same/similar consonant sound at the beginning of a word
Creates rhythm/emphasis to word
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds anywhere in a word
Add emphasis and slow down rhythm
Consonance
Repetition of similar consonant sounds
Can add rhythm or add emphasis
Euphony
Words that are pleasing to the ear
Creates a peaceful mood
Cacophony
Sounds that are harsh to the ear
impact mood, create harsh/angry tone
Metonymy
Figurative language where something closely related is representing something else
Kleenex for facial tissue, suits for rich people, use for comparison
Synecdoche
Something that is part of a whole from something
hands for people, gears for mechanical appliances, comparison
Enjambment
A continuous flow from one line to another, grammatical construction from one line to another
Gives sense of continuation and consciousness
End Rhyme
Rhyming that happens at the end of a line
End Stopped Line
Line with paused at the end with punctuation
Can complete a thought, effect tone/rhythm
Persona
Speaker of the poem
Not always the author
Caesura
A pause in the middle of a line using punctuation marks
interrupts line to add emphasis
Mood
How a mature reader feels after reading
Tone
How persona feels about their writing
Eye rhyme
Words that look like they rhyme, but don’t
Adds tension/disorganization
