What is assonance?
Two or more words near each other with the same vowel sound
Examples Of Assonance
Clap your hands, and stamp your feet.
In this example, the repetition of the short /a/ sound is used.
What is a caesura
A pause in a line of poetry, usually created by punctuation

When one thing is described as another

Her eyes were diamonds
He is a shining star

What is cadence
It’s inflection or emphasises
What is bathos
It’s a juxtaposition of something important with something insignificant or trivial
What is hyperbole
Language that uses exaggeration for effect
What is an epigram
An epigram is a brief, interesting, memorable, and sometimes surprising or satirical statement.
What are the characteristics of a Petrarchan sonnet
It is a poem divided into an octave (8 lines) and a sestet (6 lines). There is a shift in tone or subject between these two. Rhyme scheme is usually ABBA ABBA CDC CDC- very regular.
What are the characteristics of a Shakespearean sonnet
It’s divided into 3 quatrains, and ends with a rhyming couplet. The couplet usually either summarises of quatrain, or adds a twist/ new way of thinking about the theme of subject matter. Rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
What is an elegy poem
It is a poem of serious reflection, it is typically a lament for the dead
What is a ballad
It is a poem that alternates lines of 3/4 beats. the rhyme scheme is ABAB, and the poem tells a story
What is a sonnet
It is made up of 14 lines, usually 10 syllables per line written in iambic pentameter
What is free verse
Poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular rhythm
What is blank verse
Verse without rhyme
What is a neologism
It is a new word coined by a poet
