Simile
When you describe something using like or as.
E.g. He roared as loud as a lion.
Metaphor
When you say something is something.
E.g. He was a lion roaring.
Caesura
A stop or pause in a metrical line often marked using a grammatical boundary.
Enjambment
The continuation of a sentence across a line break
Tone and tonal shift
A tone of a poem is also known as the mood. Authors often shift this which is known as tonal shift.
Iambic pentemeter
The rhythm structure used most commonly in poetry
Personification
When you give objects human like features.
Alliteration
When words in the same sentance begin with the same sound or letter.
Rhyme scheme
The arrangment of rhymes in a stanza or poem
Rhythm
The flow of the poem.
Repetition
Repeating words, lines or stanzas.
Onomatopoeia
When a word sounds like a sound.
E.g. Bang! Smash! Whizz!
Slang
A way to establish someones personality
colloquial language
Informal words, phrases and slang words.
nonsensical language
humorous or whimsical verse that features absurd characters and actions and often contains evocative but meaningless nonce words
