Rhyme
repetition of a syllable at the end of a verse
Anaphora
– repetition of a word/phrase at the start of consecutive lines
Metaphor
– saying one thing is the same as the other
Personification
– human characteristics of non-living things
Simile
– saying one this is like another thing
Alliteration
– the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words
Allusion
– an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly
Concrete poetry
– poetry in which the meaning or effect is conveyed partly or wholly by visual means
Onomatopoeia
– a word sounds like what it represents
Assonance
– vowels have same sounds, consonants do not
Consonance
– repetition of consonants in a series of words
End stop
– having a pause at the end of each line
Enjambment
– the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, couplet, or stanza
Free verse
– poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular meter
Lyric poem
– a formal type of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person
