Euphony
A combination of words used to create pleasant or melodious tone and sound.
Litotes
A deliberate understatement for effect/ the opposite of hyperbole.
Mimesis
The imitation or representation of real life in art or literature.
Chiasmus
A reversal of word order in two phrases e.g. We forget what we remember, and remember what we forget.
Epanalepsis
Repetition of the same words at the end and start of a sentence.
Archaism
The use of words or constructions that have passed out of the language before the time of writing.
Cacaphony
A combination of words used to create a hard, harsh or unpleasant tone and sound.
Denotation
The literal meaning of a word, this does not include any metaphors or associations with the word. opposite of connotation.
Apostrophise
An address to a dead or absent person as if they were present.
Eye rhyme
An imperfect rhyme in which two words are spelled similarly but pronounced differently.
Adynaton
A kind of hyperbole where the exaggeration is so great that it refers to an impossibility.
Adnomination
The repetition of root words within a sentence, often in a sarcastic or ironic manner.
Reification
The act of changing something abstract or intangible into something real and tangible.
