Simile?
A simile is when one thing is compared to another using ‘as’ or ‘like’
Metaphor?
When something is described by saying that it is something else
Personification?
When things or ideas are given human characteristics
Sensory language?
Language connected to the five senses to create an image of description
Symbolism?
The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities
Alliteration?
When the same sound or letter is repeated at the beginning of several words
Fricatives?
Repetition of the ‘f’ ‘th’ and ‘ph’ sounds
Sibilance?
Repetition of the ‘s’ sounds
Liquid sounds?
Repetition of the ‘l’ sounds
Onomatopoeia?
Words which imitate or suggest the sound of what they describe
Plosives?
A sound made by closing the mouth and then releasing a burst of breath eg: ‘b’ ‘d’ ‘p’ and ‘t’
Oxymoron?
A combination of contradictory or opposite words
Juxtaposition?
The juxtaposition of two contrasting ideas is the fact that they are placed together so that their differences are emphasised
Stanza?
The name for a verse in a poem
Rhyme?
Correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, especially when they are used at the ends of lines in a poem
