Metre

Assonance
Similar vowel sounds in near by words
Alliteration
2 or 3 words in a row that have the same starting letter eg- wise words wait
Repetition
Repeating of a particular line or phrase
Onomatopoeia
Words that sound like what they describe eg- bang, squelch and twinkle
Irony
Opposite to what is expected
Personification
Objects, ideas or animals with human characteristics e.g. Lighting danced across the sky. The wind howled in the night
Simile
Figure of speech that compares two things eg- as light as a feather, lonely as a cloud
Closed form
Has rhyme, metre and line lenght
Stanza
Units of the poem, like paragraphs
Quatrain
A stanza with 4 lines, usually called a verse
Oxymoron
A figure of speech in which contradictory terms appear side by side. E.g. Civil war and act naturally. 2 words put together to make a new word
