What is alliteration?
When words in a poem/sentence(s) start with the same letter
E.g. Palmer paints pretty pink pictures
Guzzling and gulping
What is imagery?
The pictures in the poem
What is rhythm?
The beat of the poem
What is repitition?
Words/Phrases repeated near eachother.
What is rhyming?
When words sound the same (e.g. mat, cat, bat)
What is onomatopoeia?
The use of words which sound like the thing that they represent (e.g. Buzz, bang, ribbit)
What is a hyperbole?
Exaggeration to get a point across
What is personification?
Giving human qualities/feeling/emotions to non-human things
What is a simile?
Comparing two things using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’
What is a metaphor?
Comparing two things without using ‘like’ or ‘as’
What is assonance?
Assonance is when vowel sounds are repeated in a poem.
E.g. Emer’s Eyes
The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain
What is sibilance?
The repetition of ‘s’ sounds
E.g. The sea snake slithered in the sand.
What is the tone?
The poet’s attitude in a poem.
E.g. I’d toddle safely home and die in bed”
What is enjambment?
Enjambment is a run on line in a poem.
Example:
Spring evening in twilight
I have nowhere to hide’.
