John Agard was born in Guyana in the Caribbean. He moved to the UK in the late 1970’s where he began educating people about Caribbean culture. He often uses his own Caribbean style of speaking in his poems to give full expression to the voice of his homeland

What is the context in No Problem?

A

Zephaniah was born in the ‘Jamiacan capital of Europe’ known as Handsworth, Birmingham. As a child he suffered from abuse based on the racial stereotyping prevalent in the 1960’s and 70’s. He also suffered from racial abuse on the terraces at Aston Villa Football Club. He was dyslexic and was sent to school but left at 13 unable to read or write. He later spent some time in jail for burglary.

What is the context in Belfast Confetti?

A

Ciaran Carson is from Northern Ireland, born into an irish-speaking family. He has a deep interest in politics. He lived through what became to be known as the ‘troubles’. This was the era of the Irish nationalist terrorism that marked UK social and political life from the 1970’s to the 1990’s. During that time organisations such as IRA fought to end the British rule over Northern Ireland.

What is the context in Exposure?

A

WW1 began in 1914 and at first it was predicted to end swiftly. However, as both side dug trenches across France and Belgium, the opposing sides became locked in stalemate that neither side could break. By the winter of 1917 both sides had sustained massive losses and extreme cold weather made the misery even worse. It was said to be the coldest winter in living memory. As a result the soldiers suffered from many illnesses, not because of the war but because of the weather.
