Lines and Stanzas
A group of lines in a poem is called a stanza.
Rhythm
A flow of beat/rhythm, that can go slow or fast depending on the mood of the poem.
Meter
The number of syllables in lines of a verse that flows in a rhythm like beat (not rhyming).
Rhyme
Words that are alike because they make the same sound/syllable at the end of a word.
Rhyme scheme
The pattern of rhymes at the end of a line in a poem categorized by a letter (ABCD) depending on what lines rhyme.
Imagery
The use of words to create feelings that relate to the five senses (Smell, touch, hear, taste, and see).
Graphic Elements
When the author uses punctuation and capitalization to create an effect of imagery or senses.
Author’s Purpose
When the author of a poem has a reason of writing the poem.
Repetition
When poets repeats words, phrases or lines in a poem.
Tone
The atmosphere or emotion that’s created in a poem (happy, angry, silly, etc).
Mood
The way the reader of a piece of writing feels when reading it (uneasy, fearful, sympathetic).
