Rhyme
The repetition of syllables, typically at the end of a verse line
Rhyme scheme
Assign a letter to each line (ABCD) to describe rhyme scheme used. Repeat each letter for repeated sounds.
Rhythm
Refers to the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of a verse, which can create a musical or metrical effect. It is the beat or pace of a poem.
Meter
It is simply rhythm in poetry. A poem can have rhyme and rhythm or just rhyme with no rhythm.
Free verse poem
Has no rhyme nor rhythm. No rules or patterns.
Metaphor
Comparing directly without using “like” or “as”
Simile
Comparing using “like” or “as”
Personification
Giving human characteristics to non-human things
Allusion
Referencing another story or text
Alliteration
Sound device that layers additional meaning on the text with repeated similar sounds
Volta
The “turn” or “shift” in the sonnet. The “ah-ha!” moment.
Sonnets
A poem of 14 lines using formal line schemes
What is Slam poetry
Word performance. Combines elements of performance, writing, competition, and audience participation. Slam poetry is meant to be performed, whereas poetry is intended to be read. And rapping is the musical performance of poetry.
What is the structure of a sonnet?
There are three stanzas, at the bottom, there is a stanza with two lines, and there are three quadrants with four lines each, one couplet with two lines.
