Stanza
A division in a poem consisting of a series of lines arranged together in a usually recurring pattern of meter and rhyme.
Name all 6 types of stanzas:
Couplet, tercet, quatrain,
cinquain, sestet, septet.
What’s a couplet?
A two line stanza, often rhyming.
Rhyme:
Repetition of similar sounds in the final syllables of two or more words.
Rhyme scheme
the pattern of rhyme that comes at the end of each line in poetry.
How is rhyme scheme referred to?
It is often referred to using letters to indicate which lines rhyme.
perfect rhyme
rhyme in which the final accented vowel and all succeeding consonants and syllables are identical.
what are other terms used to refer to perfect rhyme?
true rhyme, full rhyme.
example of perfect rhyme:
blue, true.
Half Rhyme
When two words nearly rhyme, but not quite; either the vowels are the same but consonants are different (or vice versa)
Example of half rhyme:
year, your.
End rhyme
When the words at the end of two or more lines rhyme.
Internal rhyme
When two or more words within the same line rhyme.
Meter
the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables within the lines of poetry.
metrical foot
a unit of meter
