Metaphor
A metaphor is a figure of speech, where something is described as being something else, or as something that it can’t be.
Simile
Similes are figures of speech, where one thing is compared to another using “like” or “as”.
Onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia is words that sound like the noise that they describe.
Personification
Personification is a figure of speech which gives human qualities to inanimate objects or animals.
Imagery
Imagery is words that a writer uses to create strong pictures in the reader’s mind.
Stanza
A stanza is a verse of poetry.
Enjambment
Where a sentence runs over a number of lines.
Structure
Structure means the way a poem is organised.
Volta
A volta is a moment in a poem where the feeling of the poem changes or the poem takes an unexpected direction.
It’s also known as the poem’s turning point.
Rhyme
Rhyme is the way words or parts of words sound, usually they end with the same sound.
Half rhyme
A half rhyme is when two words almost have the same sound, but not quite.
Rhyme scheme
A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymes at the end of each line of a poem.
Rhythm
Rhythm is a strong pattern of sound or words or musical notes that’s used in poetry, music, and dancing.
Pace
Pace is how fast and/or slow the sounds are in a poem.
Syllable
Syllables are the units of sounds in a word.
