Poetry
Poetry often tells a story or conveys a message
Poets often use the following devices in their writing:
-figurative language
-rhyme scheme
-and different sound devices
Poets use these elements to help create mood and convey a central theme
These poetic devices also make a poem memorable
Rhyme
One of two or more words or phrases that end in the same sounds. They can also be repetitive words as well as words that start with the same letter and end with the same letter.
Rhyme Scheme
Rhyme scheme is a pattern of end rhymes in a poem
A rhyme scheme is noted by assigning a letter of the alphabet
The first letter assigned is “a”
Any word that rhymes with the end word of the first line will also be marked “a”
The next line after the first line that does not rhyme with the first line will be “b”
Any words that have the same rhyming end of lines will get the same letter
Mood
The feeling the poem creates for the reader
Aliteration
The repetition of beginning consonant sounds in words
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in non-rhyming words
Consonance
The repetition of consonant sounds within and at ends of words
Repetition(Refrain)
Restating the same words or phrases, or the same grammatical constructions.
Analyze Rhyme
1.Rhyme is the repetition of sounds at the end of words
2.Words rhyme when their accented vowels and the letters that follow then create identical or similar sounds.
Ex:Dreamy/Weary-Roar/More-Chair/Stair
Reasons why poets use rhyme
1.To create musical quality
2.To emphasize sounds that suggest a particular feeling such as;
3. surprise or sadness
4.To create rhythms, or patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables
A poets form in structure
It’s rhythm, line length, system of rhyme and repetition
What is the structure of the poem?
Three eight line stanzas and each line has four beats
How does the structure contribute to the poet’s meaning?
The structure gives the poem a song like quality which connects it to the title
How do the rhyme and sound devices help to create the mood?
They help create the mood by helping with the significance in the poem and help the reader understand the tone in the poem the poet is going for.
