When two or more words start with the same letter sound in a line
Alliteration
When a word or phrase is repeated in a poem
Repetition
When two or more words use the same vowel sound, but do not rhyme
Assonance
When two or more words use the same consonant sound ( Non-Vowel Sounds), often at the end of words, and the words do not rhyme
Consonance
A poem which doesn’t follow any rules but focuses more on describing a scene or idea
Free Verse
A poem that tells a story
Narrative
A three-line nature poem with a 5-7 syllable pattern. Doesn’t rhyme
Haiku
The way a poem is laid out on the page, the rhyme scheme and rhythm of the poem, along with a set of rules each specific type of poem must follow
Form/ Structure
Comparing two or more things using “like” or “as”
Simile
Comparing two or more thing without using “like” or “as”
Metaphor
Giving non-human thing human qualities
personification
An extreme exaggeratiion
Hyperbole
A reference to a famous book, film or poel
Allusion
Using descriptive words and phrases to create a picture in the reader’s mind
Imagery
The feeling of the word despite its definition (Usually positive or negative)
