What is Connotation?
Emotional overtone attached to a word beyond literal definition. May be positive, neutral, or negative.
Example: I really love this game.
What is and Anaphora?
The repitition of a word or a group of words at the *beginnings *of a clause or line
Example:I have a dream that one day…I have a dream that tomorrow….
What is a Slant Rhyme?
Also known as a *Near Rhyme *or Half Rhyme.
Stressed syllables sound similar due to same consonants or vowel sound, but **never **both.
Example: Dog-Clob
What is a Symbol?
Anything that can represent something on a figurative level.
Example: Scissors represent restraint.
What is Theme?
A writers central idea or main message about life.
Example: Eyes only open when we are in danger or we are sleeping.
What is an Allusion?
A referance to a well-known person, event, or place from history, music, art, or another literary device.
Example: Adam & Eve referance.
What is a Metaphor?
A comparison between two unlike things in which one thing is spoken of as if it were another.
Example: The moon looks like a toenail.
What is Tone?
The writer or speaker’s attitude towards the subject.
Example: I hate the way you look my way.
What is Imagery?
Use of details to show the audience a picture in their heads using one or more of the 5 senses.
Example: It feels rough like scaley rough, the rough you never want to touch because of fear.
What is Diction?
The writers choice of words.
Example: He never knew why she was curious about is charm, wit and intelligence.
What is an Hyperbole?
Exaggeration. (Figurative Language)
Example: I am tougher than the avalanche that is hurling toward you.
What is an Onomotopoeia?
Words that suggest their meaning. Usually the way somehting sounds.
Example: Drip Drip - Plop - Boink
What is an Alliteration?
The repetition of an initial consanant sounds in the words that are close together.
Example: Alligators attack the anteater.
What is a Rhyme?
The repetition of sounds at the ends of words.
Example: Play Hey May Clay
What is Repetition?
The use of any element of language – a sound, a word, a phrase, a line, or a stanza – more than once.
Example: Plop Plop Plop
What is a Simile?
Comparison using the words “as” or “like”.
I am as tall as a tree found in the Red Woods.
What is Personification?
Making an inatimate object sound as if it were alive.
My words were as deprived of water as I was.
What is Figurative Language?
Imaginative language not meant to be taken literally.
Example: Metaphor - Simile - Personifation
What is Verbal Irony?
The speaker say something and means the complete opposite.(Sarcasm)
Example: You made a false accusation genius.
What is Situational Irony?
When an event contradicts the expectations of the reader and the character.
Example: She came into the room to get her phone and then fell down a hole.
