Q

Why did Margret Atwood write City planners?

A

-Margaret Atwood wrote this poem as a response to the rapid increase of housing in Canada and the USA after WW2. Also explains why many of the houses were built with the same material making them similar due to being built in a short amount of time and being rushed
-Also to critique how the government t is some cities were expanding and disregarding nature and destroying the surrounding nature in the process
-Also to raise awareness for how life was like in living in a suburban neighbourhood

Q

What is some of the main methods/language features of City planners?

A

-Dramatic monologue with a free rhyme scheme

-Simile:”A splash of paint in bricks surprised as a brick “. Shows that the paint stands out like it doesn’t belong and helps to compare that the paint sticks out like a band-aid on the skin

-Imagery.”Future cracks under the pressure “. Shows that the damage has already been done and time will expose it . Also shows the underlaying problems/flaws in the past that will affect the present

-Metaphor.”Transitory lines as rigid as wooden barriers”. Shows how important and hastily the planners planned the city. The planners created neighbourhoods on top of nature and disregarding it .

-Imagery.”Rational whine of a power mower”. We can infer that humans are trying to perfect the environment around them and make the environment perfect for them instead of living in harmony with it .
