FORM
Structure, rhythm, and rhyme
Stanza
A group of lines forming the basic metrical unit of a poem; a “paragraph” of poetry
Couplet
Two lines of poetry that rhyme with each other
Quatrain
Four lines of poetry with the same rhythm/rhyme scheme
Rhythm
Varying speed, intensity, and pitch of a speech
Meter
The measured, patterned arrangement of syllables according to stress and length
Foot
One unit of words composed of syllables organized into a sound pattern
iamb
A rhythmic pattern of one unstressed and one stressed syllable; sounds like a heartbeat
Free verse
Poetry that has no regular rhyme or rhythm pattern
Blank verse
Poetry that has no rhyme scheme but that does have the rhythm scheme of iambic pentameter
CONTENT
Imagery, symbolism, figurative language, and sound devices
Images
Concrete or literal descriptions of a sensory experience; taste, feel, smell, sound, appearance
Symbol
Something which stands for or represents something else, usually an abstract idea
Allusion
A figure of speech making casual reference to a famous literary or historical figure/event
Apostrophe
Direct address, usually of a personified object idea, someone not present, or the reader
Metaphor
A direct comparison of two unlike things for effect, usually using a “to be” verb
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”
Personification
Giving human characteristics to non-human objects or ideas
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect
Onomatopoeia
A word that produces an audio effect, sounding much like whatever the word references
Alliteration
Repetition of a single sound, especially at the beginning of the word
Assonance
Repetition of a vowel sound for effect
Consonance
Repetition of a consonant sound for effect
Denotation
The literal dictionary meaning of a word
