When two or more words start with the same letter sound in a line.
Alliteration
When a word or phrase is repeated in a poem.
Repetition
When two or more words use the same vowel sound, but do not rhyme.
Assonance
When two or more words use the same consonant sounds (NON-VOWEL SOUNDS), often at the end of words, and the word do not rhyme.
Consonance
The pattern of rhyming in a poem based on the last word in each line and labeled with letters for each rhyming sound.
Rhyme scheme
A poem which doesn’t follow any rules but focuses more on describing a scene or idea.
Free Verse
A poem that tells a story.
Narrative
A three line nature poem with a 5~7~5 syllable pattern. Doesn’t rhyme.
Haiku
The way a poem is laid out on the page, the rhyme scheme and rhythm of the poem, along with a set of rules each specific type of poem must follow.
Form/Structure
Comparing two things using ¨like¨ or ¨as¨
Simile
Comparing two things WITHOUT using ¨like¨ or ¨as¨
Metaphor
Giving non-human things human qualities.
Personification
An extreme exaggeration.
Hyperbole
A reference to a famous book, film or poem.
Allusion
Using descriptive words and phrases to create a picture in the readers mind.
