language: looking at what words have been chosen and why. Imagery and poetic techniques that’ve been used.
Structure: The way a poem is put together. How a poet arranges their feelings and ideas to convey them most effectively
What are the 3 forms in poetry?
- Sonnets: Usually 14 lines long with a regular rhyming scheme. often about love (In Romeo and Juliet)
- Dramatic monologue: narrated by a single persona which addresses an implied audience.
- Free verse: Lines of irregular length and NO set rhythm. Doesn’t have to rhyme. Often sounds like natural speech, e.g. ‘Poppies’ (Jane Weir)
TECHNICAL TERMS: What do they mean?
- Stanza
- Tercet
- Quatrain
- Couplet
- Rhyming couplet
- Rhyming triplet
Stanza (or verse) is a group of lines
Tercet is a three-line stanza
Quatrain is a four-line stanza
Couplet is a pair of lines, usually with the same metre
Rhyming couplet is a couplet where the final word of each line rhyme
Rhyming triplet is where the final words of three successive lines rhyme with each other
A poem’s Voice is………?
Who’s speaking and How
The narrator might speak in what person……?
First person (‘I’) or Third person (‘he’ or ‘she’)
What is first-person voice? Give an example
Gives you 1 persons perspective. Often makes the poem more personal
What is third-person voice? Give an example
Often more detached from the action. it can give an outside perspective
Spoken Language
Poems can reduce spoken language, e.g. dialect words or phonetic spellings
Some poets use featured of spoken language to make the poem more natural and personal
What does personification mean?
Describing an object as if it feels or behaves in a human way
What does alliteration mean?
Words that are close together start with the same sound
What does assonance mean?
When a vowel sounds are repeated
What does sibilance mean?
When sounds create a ‘hissing’ or ‘shushing’ effect
What does onomatopoeia mean?
When a word mimics the sound its’s describing
what is sensory Imagery?
when the poet uses touch, sight, sound, smell and taste to create a vivid image in the readers mind
