A cross between poetry and drama.
How does the poet hide his own feelings in his work?
Through the use of speakers.
Characteristics of the dramatic monologue:
A single person who is not the poet speaks at a moment in time
The speaker addresses and interacts with one or more people
There is unintentional revelation of temperament and character
How is the dramatic monologue and ironic mode?
The reader senses a discrepancy between what the speaker says and what the poet implies
What are the advantages of the form?
Allows poets to explore different point of views and not be attached to them
Can prove that truth is relative to each person
Gives the poet the scope to experiment with voice and tone.
