What is alliteration?
Repetition of consonant sounds at word beginning e.g. Sharks swimming silently in the stormy seas
What is assonance?
Deliberate repetition of vowel sounds e.g. Like,wife, night, file
What is Enjambment?
Enjambment is continuation of phrase from one line to the next without pause
What is Half rhyme?
Half rhyme is words nearly rhyming
What is hyperbole?
Deliberate exaggeration
What is metaphor?
A comparison stating one thing is the thing that it resembles e.g.
What is Motif
A recurring idea or symbol that is key to interpretation e.g. The tattoos coming to life in the Illustrated Man
What is an onomatopoeia?
A word sounding like the sound or noise it makes eg crash, splash
What is personification?
A non living thing given human characteristics e.g. The wind screamed, the earth groaned
What is repetition?
Using the same word or phrase pattern in a sentence
What is a simile?
A comparison between two things using like or as e.g. Dark as the night
What is Rhyme?
Words ending and sounding the same eg hope, cope, soap,pope
What is rhythm?
The regular beat to the sound of the poetry
What is the speaker?
The narrator.
What is a stanza?
A clear section in the poem - like a verse
