Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things in which NO word of comparison (like or as) is used (eg. A green plant is a machine that runs on solar energy).
Similie
A comparison of two alike things in which a word of comparison (like or as) is used. (Eg. She stood in front of the alter, shaking like a freshly caught trought.
Hyperbole
An exaggeration or overstatement (eg. I have seen this river so wide it only had one bank).
Onomatopoeia
The use of a word whose sound suggest last it’s meaning (eg. Clang, buzz, beep).
Theme
The central thought as a whole. The theme is the statement made about the topic.
Rhyme
The similarity or likeness of sound existing between two words. (Eg. “Sat” and “cat”are perfect rhymes because the vowel and final consonant sounds are exactly the same.
Rhymed verse
Verse with end rhyme that usually has regular meter.
Stanza
Grouping of lines by form or rhyme
Couplet
A pair of lines that rhyme
Triplet
Three lines that rhyme
Quatrain
Four lines that rhyme, it can be either; abab, aaaa, abacb or abba
Sestet
Six lines grouped together
Octave
Eight lines grouped together
Repetition
The repeating of a word or phrase within a poem or a prose piece to create a sense of rhythm (eg. His laugh, his dare, his shrug/ sag ghost like.
Symbolism
Concrete objects are used to stand for an abstract idea or concept. Symbols are drawn from places, people, themes, events, ancient mythology and religions (eg. Rose=love, dove=peace, cross=Christianity)
