What is a simile?
A comparison between two unlike things using
“like” or “as”
Example: “Her smile was as bright as the sun.”
What is a metaphor?
A direct comparison between two things by saying one thing is another.
Example: “Time is a thief.”
Critical Thinking: How does a metaphor create a stronger image than a simile?
What is personification?
Giving human qualities to non-human things.
Example: “The wind whispered through the trees.”
What is imagery?
Descriptive language that appeals to the five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell).
Example: “The scent of fresh-baked bread filled the warm kitchen.”
What is foreshadowing?
Hints or clues about future events in a story.
Example: “He had a bad feeling about entering the house, but went in anyway.”
What is allegory?
A story that acts as a metaphor for a broader message, often political or moral.
Example: “Animal Farm” is an allegory for the Russian revolution
What is hyperbole?
An extreme exaggeration for emphasis or effect.
Example: “I’ve told you a million times!”
What is alliteration?
The repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of words.
Example: “She sells seashells by the seashore.”
