What is alliteration?

What does allusion refer to?
A passing or casual reference, an incidental mention of something.
Provide an example of an allusion.
‘He’s such a Romeo’ refers to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
What is assonance?
Rhyme in which the same vowel sounds are used with different consonants in the stressed syllables.
What is apostrophe in literary terms?
The direct address of an absent or imaginary person or a personified object or idea.
What is consonance?
The use of the repetition of consonants or consonant patterns as a rhyming device.
Define figurative language.
Speech or writing that departs from literal meaning to achieve a special effect.
What characterizes free verse?
Verse composed of variable, usually unrhymed lines with no fixed metrical pattern.
What is hyperbole?
An obvious and intentional exaggeration not intended to be taken literally.
What does imagery refer to in poetry?
The use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions or ideas.
What is irony?
When the exact opposite of what was intended happens.

The comparison of one thing to another without using like or as.

A unit of rhythm in poetry, the pattern of the beats.

A figure of speech that uses the name of one object for that of another to which it is related.
What does mood refer to in literature?
A distinctive emotional quality or character.
What is onomatopoeia?
The formation or use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to.

A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined.
